What is success? How do you define success? I used to define it as a big paycheck, a large savings account, no debt, and a good career. I thought it was having a retirement plan and health insurance. Every promotion I received validated my definition of success.
Then, there’s the definition of success according to Ralph Waldo Emerson:
I had a successful life, according to society’s definition. Of course, I was working 80 hours a week but my quality of life was terrible and my relationships were deteriorating due to neglect.
Today, I finished reading Jeremiah and it made me think more about what success means to God. I often quote Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
This is a great and uplifting scripture but it’s to the Israelites about what life will be like after their seventy years of exile are completed. Jeremiah was faithful to the Lord and obedient. He did everything that was asked of him and he suffered. He was imprisoned many times and threatened with death.
By today’s standard, Jeremiah would be considered a failure but in God’s eyes Jeremiah is a success. He obeyed despite the opposition and the worldly consequences of his work. He knew that while he went through difficult times on earth, his reward was going to be in heaven with the Lord. He had challenges and moments where he questioned God but he did what he was called to do.
“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.” – Hebrews 10:35-36
God gave Jeremiah the confidence and endurance to complete the task God gave him. We can also be encouraged that God gives us the same confidence and endurance to complete whatever tasks He’s called us to do. He knows what we’re going through.
I personally have been amazed at how He has provided for me in this season of my life. It hasn’t been easy and some days, I feel like He has only provided me with enough to get through that day and just that day but I have never been alone. He is faithful even when I am not. Whatever is going on in your life, remember that God is with you and He will help you get through whatever He has called you to do.
I define success as being obedient to God in whatever He calls you to do, whenever He calls you to do it. How successful are you?
